Synopsis
Radio arts review programme. Peter Brook talks to Matthew Sweet about his relationship with Shakespeare following the publication ‘The Quality of Mercy Reflections on Shakespeare’, a collection of essays and speeches. Brook shares his thoughts on why Titus Andronicus is often neglected and recounts General Tito seeing his production in Belgrade with Olivier and Vivien Leigh. He comments on Olivier’s style and skill at stage and cinema acting. Brook,speaks of the enormous influence of the cinema on stage acting and the problems of working with film producers, especially Sam Spiegel in LORD OF THE FLIES. He further speaks on the question of authorship of Shakespeare and of the dangers of right-wing politics. He concludes by expressing his love of Measure for Measure and declares that he will never direct another Shakespeare play as he is "too old".
