Othello, Der Mohr in Wien

Synopsis: Joseph Ferdinand Kringsteiner’s 19th-century burlesgue of Othello written in the Viennese dialect for the popular Viennese stage. The play is set among the servant class of Vienna: Mussi Cassio is a stupid, drunken barber from the country; Othello, Roderigerl, and Jackerl (Iago) are all servants of the wealthy Viennese Herr von Nascherl, and Desdemonerl’s father, Wastl, is his house-porter. Othello’s expedition consists in his being sent to the Viennese suburb Wieden, where he is to deal with peach thieves in Nascherl’s garden and to function as a scarecrow.
