Synopsis
Anthology television documentary arts series presented by Melvyn Bragg. Documentary on Hamlet and its many performances and interpretations. The focus is on three 1989 productions directed by Richard Eyre (National Theatre), Yuri Lyubimov (touring production) and Ron Daniels (Royal Shakespeare Company), all of whom are interviewed along with John Barton, Michael Pennington (who gives readings), Mark Rylance, and archive interviews with Tyrone Guthrie (1960) and Orson Welles (1963). The many clips from film and television versions include Sarah Bernhardt from 1900, John Barrymore’s colour screen test from 1933, Jonathan Pryce possessed by his father’s ghost (Royal Court, 1980), Derek Jacobi from the BBC Television Shakespeare series and Rylance in rehearsal (IV, iii).
