LORD WAKEHURST BALLET FILM COLLECTION REEL 13 (catalogued separately) contains three minutes of rehearsal footage from this production. However different dancers are credited in the parts of Romeo and Juliet.
General
This was the first time Cranko allowed a company permission to perform one of his full-length ballets and Romeo and Juliet was the last ballet that the choreographer personally mounted for a company outside Stuttgart. The Canadian premiere took place at Montreal’s Place des Arts on April 14, 1964, with guest artists from the Stuttgart Ballet, Marcia Haydee and Ray Barra in the title roles.
History
The programme was first transmitted in April 1965. The Jerome Robbins Dance Archive copy is preceded by the introduction to a repeat transmission on 15 September 1965 as well as the original introduction by Peter Donat.
Awards
The production won the Prix Rene Barthelemy at the International Television Festival in Monte Carlo in 1966.
