Synopsis
Producer and director Joseph Papp is interviewed by Beverly Sills about his career and the development of the New York Shakespeare Festival and public theatre. Papp discusses his belief that theatre should not be an elitist institution and emphasises his conviction that the arts are of vital importance to society. He also discusses his approach to interpreting Shakespeare’s works. Includes footage of some New York Shakespeare Festival productions including Cleavon Little performing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech from the 1968 NYSF production of Hamlet. Also performance footage of three scenes from the 1978 NYSF production of The Taming of the Shrew with Raul Julia as Petruchio and Meryl Streep as Katherine.
