Synopsis

Five-part series in which Michael Kustow explores Shakespeare’s status as the world’s most popular playwright. In episode two Kustow examines the political uses of Shakespeare, particularly under tyranny. With Dragan Klaic, theatre critic in exile from former Yugoslavia, Ion Caramitrou whose Hamlet helped defeat Caeucescu, and Janet Suzman who directed a white Desdemona with a black Othello during the apartheid regime in South Africa.
