Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 2006. (p268, entry 1127). Lanier sees the cartoon as a ‘burlesque of high culture, targeting both opera and Shakespeare’ and notes the number of gags that depend upon cross-dressing - both Bluto and Popeye wear Juliet’s costume.
