Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, The: 1919-1945

Synopsis
Slide set. Since its opening in 1879 the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, renamed the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1961, has won worldwide acclaim for the staging of Shakespeare’s plays. The slides show the developments in scenic design and production methods at the theatre during its transformation from provincial touring stop into an institution of international standing. By referring to productions mounted by W. Bridges-Adams, Komisarjevsky, Iden Payne and Robert Atkins, the slides provide a brief history of Shakespeare’s plays in performance at Stratford.
