The first episode cheats slightly, covering the years 1888 - 1914 in one fell swoop, but from 1915 onwards the focus is on a single film per year, each example being selected for the way in which it demonstrates the advances made in the cinematic medium, in terms of technology, technique, genre etc. Amongst the directors covered are Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Cecil B. DeMille and Buster Keaton. The site addresses animation, the advent of sound, techniques such as montage and the close-up, as well as early filmic examples of documentary, horror and science-fiction.
