There are many science podcasts, but very few dedicated to computer sciences. Created in 2010 by researchers and students at Edinburgh University, Compucast is a lively and varied podcast about computer science and related technologies. Presented in a magazine format and aimed at an audience with a reasonable grounding in the subject, the programmes cover subjects such as robotics, systems biology, semantics, artificial intelligence and energy efficient data centres, amongst others. The podcasts are in MP3 format and are free to download.

This podcast is presented in a magazine format and features interviews with researchers and scientists at Imperial College, London, as well as round-ups of the latest science news. The podcasts are distinguished by their variety: a typical example covering how gene therapy could treat a rare form of blindness, how economics shapes discourse on climate change and how to protect creative industries while fostering innovation. The podcasts can be streamed or downloaded free of charge and can be listened to as a whole or in individual chapters.

The brainchild of former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, this site uses various media, including podcasts and videos, to explain how things work. It is essentially a popular science site but contains a great deal of high quality educational content and has now expanded to cover non-science subjects (see for example How Nepotism Works). Searching is made easier by a clear interface in which categories with their various subdivisions are simply displayed: the Engineering Videos page, for example, features categories such as Robotics, Buildings and Structures, Materials Science. The site’s videos and podcasts are supplemented by a number of blogs.

A vast and useful site providing free downloadable video and audio lectures of entire courses from respected academic institutions from around the world including MIT, Stanford and Yale. The site is science-oriented but covers some of the Humanities too, ranging across the fields of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Accounting, Dentistry, Nursing, Psychology, History, Language courses, Literature, Law, Economics, Philosophy, Astronomy and Political Science. Most of the materials offered are licensed by the respective institutes under a Creative Commons licence. One of the more innovative aspects of Learner’s TV is the provision of animations for certain science subjects to help students visualise difficult or abstract concepts.

To celebrate the range of scientific issues discussed during the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary year the Science Sees Further website has been set up. It offers all those interested in science an opportunity to look at the key scientific issues of today, and those of tomorrow. The site is arranged in 12 chapters based on the subjects of the year’s discussion meetings - the ageing process, biological diversity, cognition and computation, cultural diversity, extra-terrestrial life, geoengineering, global sustainability, greenhouse gases, new vaccines, stem cell biology, uncertainty in science, and web science. Each section comprises an attractive subject summary (authored by the meeting organisers), short historical context using material from the Society’s Centre for History of Science, as well as interactive audio and video material.

This ambitious and highly impressive resource accompanies the 4-part BBC series on the history of the web presented by Dr Aleks Krotoski. Excitingly designed, its most significant features include a 3D Documentary Explorer, an experimental interactive browser that allows the first two episodes of the series to be viewed alongside relevant web content so that one may stop the programme at any moment and select other material to peruse and then restart again. In a fascinating development, rushes from the making of the series are also available for download to help users create their own documentary. Highly recommended.

The website accompanying the BBC Radio 4 series In Our Time, in which Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the history of ideas, has been redesigned, and the Archive section now makes every episode broadcast since the series began in 1998 available to listen to again via RealPlayer. Programmes are searchable by title, genre (culture, history, philosophy, religion, science) and by era, from prehistoric to 20th century. Recent programmes are available as podcasts, and an e-mail newsletter gives Melvyn Bragg’s personal insight into the latest programme.

The video and audio programmes presented here with the minimum of fuss are viewable using RealPlayer, and cover such subjects as Web Design, Web Programming and Virtual Reality. The main topics have been subdivided into as many as 27 separate sections, most of which are presented as one-hour lectures. The encoding is only average, but there is much useful material contained in the several hundred hours of audio and video contained within.
