TV Mole is a practical guide to getting factual TV programmes commissioned. It is a one-stop resource to help originate, research, write and successfully pitch ideas to broadcast, digital or cable TV channels. Based at the University of Maryland, this site is dedicated to all aspects of film studies and is firmly aimed at students. Amongst its most useful features is a look at ‘Digital Narrative’ and a glossary of film language that is well illustrated with a large number of streamed clips from a host of well-known films. There are also details of the courses run at the university and links to several dozen other general film sites.

Created by the Leland Stanford Junior University, this site offers a wide variety of materials from text to animations and time-lapse videos in both English and Spanish. An impressive collection of instructional videos for free, online viewing produced by Russell Stannard of the University of Warwick, with the aim of encouraging and helping teachers and lecturers to use ICT and Web 2.0 technologies in their teaching. There are three separate collections of videos: one for tools to use in ESL/ELT teaching; one for teaching foreign languages (not just English); and one for teachers of any subject who want to know more about using ICT/Web 2.0 technologies and specific tools in their teaching.

iTunesU offers an extensive and ever-expanding range of video and audio educational material for use in teaching and learning in higher education. Content mainly originates in the US and is supplied by universities, museums, cultural institutions and public broadcasting stations. Much of the footage consists of filmed lectures. UK universities now supplying programmes include Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and the Open University. Tracks can be downloaded to ipods or iphones or viewed online.

The Crime and Deviance Channel is a subscription-only site offering a range of teaching tools (based around four major categories: Text, PowerPoint, Video and Audio resources) that can be integrated into both classroom and VLE-based schemes of work. Channel subscribers gain access to a wide range of resources designed to bring the topic of Crime and Deviance to life in lively and informative ways. The Channel currently contains around 130 minutes of video and 70 minutes of audio material plus extensive text-based and PowerPoint resources. Channel resources are organised around seven key themes that can be accessed from the Channel Menu at any time: Theories of Deviance; Power and Control; Social Distribution of Crime; Globalisation and Crime; Suicide; Research Methods; Exam Bytes.

The Open University has launched a YouTube channel featuring over 300 videos, with educational content in the OULearn section and videos from staff, students and alumni in the OULife section. OU Learn showcases extracts of video learning materials from Open University courses and television broadcasts, covering languages, arts & humanities, and science. OULife contains video blogs, graduation ceremonies, etc uploaded by OU staff and students. A Youtube research channel is planned for launch in 2009. OU educational resources are also available for download as free audio or video podcasts on the OU section of iTunesU and on the beta site OU podcast site

This archive, hosted by Columbia University, offered access to the complete range of free content developed for Fathom by its member institutions. Fathom was made up of 14 institutions, including LSE, the British Library, Cambridge University, Chicago University, and offered interviews, articles, performances, exhibits and free online seminars. The bias was mainly towards science, but journalism, history, politics and other areas were also covered. Inactive since August 2012 the site shows the following message: "This site is not longer being developed or maintained, but was part of a series of early and experimental online learning projects. Material here continues at present to be available to members of the Columbia community, but there may be some segments of the site that no longer work as initially intended."

DigiTales was a digital storytelling project involving people from across Europe making short films about their lives, funded by the European Social Fund and led by Hi8us Projects Limited, within the Inclusion Through Media (ITM) partnership. The project has concluded though the legacy site Equal Works provides information on accessing a DVD of the films produced.
This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 03/07/2011. This does not include access to the moving images.
