Description
The Digital Britain report notes that a way of potentially boosting a sustainable content production base in the Nations involves a change in status for certain production companies. This consultation document seeks views on whether the legislative definition of “independent producer” should be amended to extend to production companies that are wholly owned by broadcasters who hold a relevant Channel 3 licence. Independent production companies qualify for quotas requiring the BBC, C4, ITV plc and Five to buy original TV content from independent producers. The proposed change would give production companies which are wholly owned by Channel 3 broadcasters independent status, and enable them to supply content under the quotas. An impact assessment and draft parliamentary order are also available via the website. Consultation closed on 2 February 2010.
