Description
This paper outlines the Government’s proposals for the renewal of the BBC’s Royal Charter, which ends in 2016. Amongst the key points are the following: BBC employees and freelancers who earn more than £450,000 will be named; a new ‘unitary board’ will replace the external BBC Trust and internal BBC Executive; programme making will be open to greater competition; the National Audit Office will be granted greater powers in monitoring how the BBC spends its money; the charter period will change from 10 to 11 years, to remove it from any political cycle. In addition the BBC has been given a new mission statement: ‘To act in the public interest, serving all audiences with impartial, high-quality and distinctive media content and services that inform, educate and entertain.'
