Description
Noting the series of difficulties and mistakes - both financial and editorial - made by the BBC in recent years, this report calls for major changes to the way the BBC is governed and for changes to its funding. The report finds that the licence fee is not sustainable in the long-term, or appropriate in the modern media world. Instead it recommends a broadcasting levy on households, as well as the possibility of some kind of subscription services. The report also recommends the abolition of the BBC Trust, which it says is too close to the BBC, and that it should be replaced by a unitary board with a non-executive chair. Finally the report recommends seeking cross-party support for an independent review panel on the 2017 Charter renewal.
