Description
Report of a symposium held in London on 26.10.2011 and featuring delegates from the BFI and the University of Hertfordshire. The main aim of the day was to present the opportunity to explore ways in which academia and the film industry can interact to the mutual benefit of both sectors. For example, concern was expressed that there had been very little engagement by academics with the recent Film Policy Review. Participants expressed their thoughts as to why it was difficult for such collaborations to progress (conflicting aims, different timeframes, increasing academic specialisation to the detriment of a broader knowledge of the industry etc.) This was followed by examples of collaboration and the difficulties experienced. Further sessions looked at how to make use of industry data, audience research, and questions of film production and economic policy.
