Description
Following a public consultation, the government has announced that it intends to create legislation so that music, sports, religion and education products will have to be classified by the BBFC in future if they contain material deemed to be unsuitable for younger children. Under the Video Recordings Act 1984, video material in physical formats (DVD, Video etc.) has to be classified and awarded a certificate. However, up till now the above categories had been deemed to be exempt from classification. The rationale behind the legislation is to protect children from inappropriate material. Music, sports, religious and educational video works which are suitable for children younger than 12 (ie. which would be rated BBFC ‘U’ or ‘PG’) will remain exempt from classification.
