- This directive sets out a framework for the use of orphan works by libraries, educational establishments, archives, public broadcasting organisations, and museums. This provides an exception or limitation to the right of reproduction and making available to the public to the benefit of any of the listed institution. According to the directive any institution wishing to use an orphan work must first carry out a "diligent search" in good faith from "appropriate sources". In the UK this directive does not have to be transposed into law until 29 October 2014.
