- Description
- Commissioned by the Observatory from a leading expert in the field, Bernard Guillou of MEDIAWISE, the report deals with developments in the domain up to May 2004 and describes: the role of the Internet in film distribution; the key functions in the value chain; the lessons to be learned from the pioneers; the question of piracy in relation to: - control over manufacturing and circulation of films; protection and encryption; legal issues; distribution policy.
The report is intended to provide an overview for those interested in obtaining a working knowledge of this area and includes explanations of the technical questions and security issues involved in the distribution of film via the Internet.
It provides outlines of the business models and strategy of the principle players in the provision of Video on Demand services in the United States and Europe. A number of companies chiefly active in the provision of other types of services such as broadband access and telephony but which have branched out into the provision of VOD services are also described.
In a field in which the failures are probably better known than the successes, the report attempts to isolate the different characteristics of a market still in the early stages of development, and highlights a number of issues still to be resolved before steady growth can be envisaged.
The question of piracy is also treated, with an outline of industry reaction and efforts to combat illegal sharing of files and the effect that this has had on distribution policy.
