ULSTER FOLK AND TRANSPORT MUSEUM

- Founded in 1958, the Museum holds a sizable audiovisual archive which includes film and videotape material. Material from BBC Northern Ireland is also held in the collection. Northern Ireland’s new Digital Film Archive (see note below) includes newsreel footage of the Belfast-built Titanic, World Wars I and II, aviatrix Amelia Earhart’s accidental landing at Derry in the 1930s, and the reconstruction years of the 1950s. TV footage includes the Beatles interviewed on UTV in the early 1960s, documentaries, television news, drama and feature films. The Digital Film Archive is available free of charge on PCs to six educational centres around Northern Ireland - St Partick’s Trian in Armagh, Omagh College, the University of Ulster at Coleraine, the Nerve Centre in Londonderry, W5 at the Odyssey in Belfast and at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

- Northern Ireland’s first Digital Film Archive was launched at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in November 2000. This gives the public access to over 50 hours of moving images reflecting the history and culture of Northern Ireland from 1897 to 2000.
