LEEDS UNIVERSITY/SSRC ELECTORAL BROADCASTING ARCHIVE & GULF WAR ARCHIVE

Description
The Electoral Broadcasting Archive originated in specimens of pre-war party films and newsreel speeches acquired by the School of History, to which were then added a representative selection of the news and current affairs output of television during the February 1974 General Election campaign, with the permission of the broadcasters. Thereafter, grants from the SSRC, ESRC and the IBA, and special licensing arrangements granted by the BBC and ITCA, permitted comprehensive recording of the news, current affairs, discussion, phone-in and similar programme output of all channels received in the region (selectively also of radio) during the periods between the dissolution of Parliament and the declaration of results. Gifts from the Labour Party and others allowed the addition of programmes transmitted only in the London area.
The Gulf War Archive originated from a five-nation comparative analysis research project into the presentation of the war carried out by the Institute and funded by the ESRC, BBC, ITC and BSC. The collection consists of the round-the-clock output of BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, BSkyB and CNN, plus the peak-time output of BR2 (Germany), TF1 (France), RA1 (Italy) and Gorizout (Russia), from day two of the commencement of the hostilities to the end of the week following the armistice. Note: The Gulf War Archive is kept in the Institute of Communication Studies, University of Leeds.
