Description
The Irish Film Archive has been located in custom-built premises in the Irish Film Centre since 1992. Collections of Irish and Irish-related materials are preserved and freely accessed by researchers, programme makers and members of the public. It has been a provisional member of FIAF since 1989.

Manuscripts
The Archive holds valuable collections of private archives relating to film production and distribution in Ireland.
Posters
The Archive holds a rapidly increasing collection of posters from Irish cinema.
Still Images
The Archive holds a rapidly increasing collection of stills from Irish cinema.
Video/Film
Video: 1,500 reels/cassettes. Advertising, amateur, documentary, feature films, news and current affairs, short films.
Video components: VHS Video, hi-band U-Matic, lo-band U-Matic, Beta/Beta-SP, 1-inch Video, 2-inch Video.
Film: 15,000 cans. The archive section of the Irish Film Institute was established in 1986. Since then the collection has grown to over 10,000 (catalogued) cans of film, comprising some 5,000 titles. The collection dates from 1908 to the present day. The collection comprises advertising material (750 titles), amateur films (125 titles), documentaries (400 titles), feature films (71 titles), news and current affairs (244 titles), science and educational films (300 titles), shorts (40 titles) and travelogues (30 titles). 65% colour film, 35% black and white film, 5% nitrate film.
Film components: 8mm, Super 8mm, 9.5mm, 16mm, 35mm, positive film, negative film, fine grain print, effects mix, final mix.

Computerised database. Access is provided to database for public via archive staff. Searches can be conducted under any information entry point.

Other information
The Tiernan MacBride Library, maintained by the Librarian, is an extensive publicly accessible resource of books and periodicals relating to Irish and world cinems. The Library is open to the public on weekday afternoons. Information on the library holdings is available in the Film Institute of Ireland website.
Conservation policy
Access is only permitted to viewing copies. Where films exist only as unique, master material, access must be denied.
