- Description
- The History of Advertising Trust (HAT) is a registered charity (No. 276194) founded in 1976 to collect, preserve and protect the heritage of the UK advertising industry and to make it accessible for research and study. Its archive embraces all forms of UK brand communication including media (both old and new), direct marketing, public relations and retail marketing. HAT’s mission is to promote learning and creative excellence by preserving and celebrating the advertising heritage of the UK.
HAT is the home of the UK industry’s professional and institutional archives e.g. the Advertising Association (AA), the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (ISBA). The archives of leading advertising agencies, clubs, associations and other related organisations are also represented.
HAT Archive provides a vast and unique research resource. The collections consist of every kind of advertising and public relations material, including original artwork, posters, point of sale promotions, brochures, proofs, press and magazine cuttings, complete consumer magazines, direct mail, photographs, transparencies, audio and video tapes, TV and cinema commercials and campaign research. It also holds advertising statistics, market research and trends, industry journals and a specialist library of over 5,000 books. - Artefact description
- The HAT Archive contains over 250,000 TV and cinema commercials, 1930s-2016 on video tape and in digital format. Special collections include: British Arrows Awards 1977-present. Design & Art Direction (D&AD) 1980s - 1990s. The BBC "Washes Whiter" TV Commercial research collection 1955-1989. The Don White Collection (Cinema and TV) 1950s-1990s. Lintas Worldwide 1970s-1990s. The H J Heinz Company Ltd. Marketing Archive. The Vimto Archive. The Hovis Archive and The Butlin’s Archive. Other special collections held on film format (not TV Commercials): The H J Heinz Company Ltd film collection and the Visit Britain Collection 1940s-1990s.

- Opening Hours: Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm Research visits to be arranged by advanced appointments (at least one week’s notice). - Free to visit for ‘non-profit’, educational and personal research. Charges may apply for commercial research.
Charges apply for tape transfers, digital scanning, photocopying and reproduction fees etc. A camera license is available to purchase in the search room for £10 per day. - Copyright
