Description: Film collection started in 1960s as an adjunct to a large collection of 78 r.p.m. gramophone records (over 40,000). Films cover same period as the records from the late 1920s to the early 1950s. Emphasis is on films that would form part of ‘full supporting programme’ at a cinema during the ‘golden years’ (viz:1929 to 1949). Included are trailers, special cinema advertising shorts and other similar material, organ interlude films, cinema ‘Day Titles’, ice cream trailers, interest/documentary films, etc., (all 16mm). Also over 4,000 cinema organ song slides. The archive now also includes audio recordings from pre-war commercial radio and wartime broadcasts from Berlin in English.

Video/Film: Film: Also included is a large selection of local films from largely private sources showing scenes on Merseyside from 1929 through to the early 1960s. Earlier material is black and white, but some material from 1936 onwards is colour. Details on compositions of film holdings are not available. 5% colour film, 95% black and white film.
