Media Screen Round-up November 2016
Published: 15 December 2016The monthly round-up of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research and published at Learning on Screen by Andrew Ormsby.
This month’s bumper issue features a special issue of The European Journal of Women’s Studies on the subject of Women’s cinema and transnational Europe. The issue explores the various ways in which women’s cinema has engaged with and represented the ways in which Europe has changed over the past thirty years, with particular attention paid to the effect of globalisation since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The issue’s editor, Veronica Pravadelli, explains that the impetus for the issue was the idea that “Europe, European citizenship and identity has for some time taken shape via a tension between the two conflicting images of the wall and the flow”.
The articles and essays in the issue cover individual filmmakers and artists such as Zeyno Pekünlü, Jasmila Žbanić and Tilda Swinton, as well as broader topics such as women’s film festivals, funding, gender equality, film genres and celebrity, all viewed from a variety of perspectives and analytical approaches, including feminist and gender theory, European studies, textual analysis, transnational feminism, post-colonial theory and diaspora studies.
