The monthly roundup of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research, and published here at the BUFVC by Linda Kaye.

A special issue of Word and Image on “Writing in Film” opens this month’s Roundup. The issue covers examples of writing in and around film from film posters to the actual titles of film to the use of writing by auteurs, including Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson, David Lynch and Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard.

Other classic Hollywood films are represented in Julia Foulkes Seeing the City: The Filming of West Side Story in which the urban renewal of New York is conveyed, while Hess and Dabholkar explore the classic MGM musical The Pirate (1948) from its beginnings as a Broadway musical to the production of the film and critical and popular reception.

Finally, one of the reasons for producing Roundup is in the discovery and promotion of relevant material that may have been missed. Included in this selection is Kendra Preston Leonard’s The use of early modern music in film scoring for Elizabeth I in Dunn’s Gender and Song in Early Modern England; Kathleen Stark’s The early Cold Warrior on screen – an all-purpose signifier? In Horlacher’s Post-World War II Masculinities in British and American Literature and Culture; and in Andrew Maunder’s British Theatre and the Great War, 1914-1919, two articles on films and plays about Edith Cavell by Veronica Kelly and British Cinema, Regulation and the War Effort by Emma Hanna.
