One of our current projects is to cross-link all the newsreel films currently available on Newsfilm Online (NfO) with those stories in the News on Screen database. This would include all the Gaumont newsreels, Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932) and Gaumont British News (1934-1959) together with a small selection of British Paramount News (1931-1957), enabling the user to move easily from the story and its context to the film itself.

One of the major tasks within the project is to enhance our data of Gaumont Graphic which we currently only have in a patchy form from 1915 to 1924. We have two researchers working this, Olwen Terris and Eve-Marie Oesterlen, who are piecing together the stories from different sources and then standardising this with NfO. The original issue sheets, which listed the stories released together with the date and issue number for Gaumont Graphic, have been difficult to track down but we have located many of those for the early period from 1910 to 1915. The data from these, around 1,800 stories is currently being inputted and we hope to publish these next month.

The project is funded by JISC and will continue until February 2010.
