Media Screen Roundup – May 2015

The monthly roundup of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research, & published here at the BUFVC by Linda Kaye.

Music videos feature in articles by Vogel and Unger. While Vogel explores masculinity and race in Michael Jackson’s Black and White, Unger looks at K-Pop Girl Group Music Videos in South Korea.

A special issue of European Judaism examines “Writing Jews and Jewishness in Contemporary Britain”. Included are articles entitled A Wandering View: Writing Jews and Jewishness on British Television, Rachel Garfield’s Imagining Multicultural London: Containment and Excess in Snatch and an article about the Jewishness and Englishness of Stanley Kubrick.

Film festivals also feature in a number of books and an article. Dovey’s Curating Africa in the Age of Film Festivals offers the first scholarly exploration of the role played by film festivals in curating particular versions of Africa, African film, African filmmakers, and African audiences. Drawing on fifteen years of Dovey’s work and field research, it analyses the curation of Africans at the world fairs, the contemporary curation of African film and African filmmakers at film festivals, and the proliferation of international film festivals across Africa today.

Sonia Tascón’s Human Rights Film Festivals : Activism in Context explores how human rights developed as a language located in history, space and time, and how the festivals continue with this tradition by adapting it for local audiences. Two detailed case studies of festivals are examined, one in Buenos Aires, the other in New York, which held the first human rights film festival in the world.

Finally, Christel Taillibert in Phénomènes de circulations en festival : l’influence des nouvelles technologies looks at the development and popularity of the online film festival.
