20 years of ‘BFI Film Classics’ series
The British Film Institute launched its popular series of compact ‘BFI Film Classics’ books twenty years ago.
BFI Film Classics is a series of finely written, illustrated books which honour landmark films of world cinema. The series includes a wide range of approaches and critical styles, reflecting the diverse ways we appreciate, analyse and enjoy great films.
To celebrate, 20th anniversary editions of eleven of the books are being re-issued in new covers and many in revised editions. A twelfth book is a new title devoted to Jean Renoir’s satirical masterpiece La Regle du jeu (Rules of the Game) by V.F. Perkins. Chief among the reissued titles is Chalres Barr’s new edition of his book on Hitchock’s classic mystery movie Vertigo, which was just named as the best film ever made in the 2012 Sight & Sound poll.
