The BBC Trust has published a review of the impartiality and accuracy of science coverage across the whole of the BBC, including specialist and non-specialist science content on TV, radio and online.

The review is based on an independent report carried out by Steve Jones, Emeritus Professor of Genetics at University College London, together with content analysis by the Science Communication Group at Imperial College London, carried out over a three-month period.  Having taken into account these reports, and the BBC Executive response, on 20 July 2011 the Trust published the results of its review.

Professor Jones’ report praises the breadth and depth of the output as well as its professionalism, and clear and accurate reporting.  However, it emphasises that care must be taken to achieve the right balance between fact and opinion, and to explain to audiences the background of contributors i.e. whether they are scientists, policy-makers, lobbyists or whether they are taking an ethical stand.
