The Research and Education Space (RES) project has picked up the Linked Enterprise Data Award at the European Linked Data Contest (ELDC).

The awards, held at the Semantics Conference in Leipzig, are now in their second year and honour organisations making innovative use of linked data technologies.

The project battled it out against 37 entries from 16 countries to scoop the prize, with the judging panel commenting: ‘RES demonstrates the suitability and potential impact of Linked Data as a medium for delivering large-scale educational resources, an achievement which the ELDC jury has elected to honour.’

Hilary Bishop, BBC Project Director on the RES project said in her acceptance speech: ‘The RES project was formulated as a prototype for the idea of a wider digital public space – the idea that the UK’s cultural heritage institutions could add up to more than the sum of their parts if they allowed their collections to be linked. The idea of enriching the materials available for teaching and study in the UK seemed a natural first step.’

RES is a partnership project between Jisc, the BBC and Learning on Screen that aims to make the UK’s publicly-held archive collections digitally available to UK students, teachers and researchers.
