BFI London Film Festival Education Programme

The Education Programme for the London Film Festival starts on 17 September, building towards the Festival dates 7 – 18 October. For students, it offers special screenings of new films from around the world selected from the Festival programme, opportunities to meet a wide range of film professionals and the chance to get involved in projects, workshops and events.

Screenings are free to teaching staff and students. Highlights include the story of the early years of the struggle for women’s suffrage, SUFFRAGETTE (Dir. Sarah Gavron/UK), a ninth century wuxia epic THE ASSASSIN (Hou Hsiao-hsien/Taiwan), the first person experience of two friends making their migrant journey from Burkina Faso to Italy in MEDITERRANEA (Jonas Carpignano/Italy-France) and a new remastering of the 1988 classic, SALAAM BOMBAY (Mira Nair/India).

Event highlights include an ‘Introduction to Film Exhibition, Festivals and Awards’ featuring distribution experts and festival programmers (17 Sept), panel discussion ‘Words on Film: Exploring Film Criticism’ in partnership with the Birkbeck Institute of the Moving Image (14 Oct), ‘Bright, Bad and British: Suffragettes on Screen’ a screening and discussion of newsreel and footage from the BFI National Archive (9 Oct), as well as film industry workshops with our partners at the London Film School, London Film Academy and the National Film and Television School.

The LFF YOUNG JURY PROJECT offers the chance for ten 18-22-yr-olds to experience being a Festival Juror, focusing on the 12 new films competing in the LFF First Feature Competition. The deadline for application is soon – Wed 9 Sept. Full details and application form are here.

The LFF STUDENT ACCREDITATION SCHEME offers, subject to availability, access to press screenings and selected events/screenings in the Festival’s Industry and Public programmes. The programme is open to 18 + students on full-time FE/HE film-related courses. Applications should be made on behalf of students by course or department tutors/administrators. There are two Student Pass options:

  • ‘Student Extra’ pass (£40 inc VAT) gives access to press screenings and events from 21 Sept to the end of the festival on 18 Oct. The deadline to apply is Fri 18 Sept.
  • ‘Standard Student’ pass (£30 inc VAT) is valid for the festival period only, 7-18 Oct. The deadline to apply is Mon 5 Oct.
