Media Screen Roundup – June 2014

The monthly roundup of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research, & published here at the BUFVC by Linda Kaye.

Highlights for this month’s Roundup include Rascaroli’s Amateur Filmmaking : The Home Movie, the Archive, the Web which highlights the importance of amateur cinema using examples of home movies of Imperial India to film diaries of life in contemporary China. Brown’s The Biopic in Contemporary Film Culture looks at the range of the genre from France to South Korea to Hindi cinema. While Kennedy’s Roadshow!: The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s charts the said fall though cultural and social change as well as business and marketing failures of the film companies to artistic failures.

As for articles, Rohan McWilliam in, Elsa Lanchester and Bohemian London in the Early Twentieth Century, explores Lanchester’s role in avant-garde through dance, theatre, film and other forms of performance.  And on a more serious note Burgin in, Age of Certainty: Galbraith, Friedman, and the Public Life of Economic Ideas, examines the development of Galbraith’s The Age of Uncertainty and  Friedman’s competing series, Free to Choose, and how both approached the representation of economic ideas on television
