The monthly roundup of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research, & published here at the BUFVC by Linda Kaye.

A bit of a testosterone feel to this month’s Roundup with sport and masculinity to the fore. The International Journal of the History of Sport has a special issue on the 1912 Stockholm Olympics including articles on a documentary about the event and the films made at the time.  Diego Maradona, fans and cinema is featured in an article by Marcus Free. For those who may have missed the first issue Journal of Popular Television (not covered by Roundup), the journal ran a special entitled, The London 2012 Olympics and television: A dossier (from p. 103), which covered the opening ceremony, NBC coverage, Clare Balding and coverage of female athletes.

Articles in issues of Men and Masculinity cover man and food in film noir by Christopher Forth and ageing masculinities in The Expendables by Boyle and Brayton, in time for the third film in the franchise, due out this summer. Paul Ward discusses James Mason as a local and transatlantic star.

Turning to politics, Steven Fielding looks at New Labour, sleaze and television drama while Michael Parsons looks at Exploitation and Human Trafficking in the UK Today : Political Debate, Fictional Representation and Documentaries. There is also a biography of the Serbian film director Aleksandar Petrovic entitled, A Portrait of the Artist as a Political Dissident by Vlastimir Sudar.

And finally, there are a number of articles covering censorship. Julia Roos has an article entitled, “Huns” and Other “Barbarians”: A Movie Ban and the Dilemmas of 1920s German Propaganda against French Colonial Troops that uses the film Die schwarze Schmach (The Black Shame, 1921). Ellen Scott looks at Illinois’s first state censorship law by the Afro-American legislator Robert Jackson who attempted to use censorship as a tool for civil rights. While Frédéric Hervé looks at state and Catholic censorship in France.
