The Moving Image Gateway – Recent additions

The BUFVC Moving Image Gateway includes over 1,500 websites relating to video, multimedia and sound materials. These have been subdivided into over 40 subject areas. To suggest new entries or amendments, please contact us by email, telephone or visit the Gateway at http://bufvc.ac.uk/gateway/

Archive Farms
This American company owns and manages collections of historical photographs and footage, including newsreel collections. There are four film collections: The Travel Film Archive, The Industry Film Archive, The Newsreel Archive and the Food Film Archive. Each collection features its own YouTube channel where all the material is freely available to view, with on screen timecode. The company also has a DVD Store and links to other film and photo archives and websites concerned with the study and preservation of early film.

Ocean Explorer
This YouTube site is a freely available educational resource created by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospnheric Administration. It provides a platform for users to follow undersea explorations, observe marine flora and fauna and learn about exploration technologies. A number of links take users to further learning resources on the Ocean Explorer site, as well as channels focussing on different aspects relating to oceanography, including ecology, fishing, sustainability and climatology.

Open University Podcasts
This beta site presents the entire range of podcasts produced by The Open University. The site is divided into three sections: OU Learn, OU Research and OU Life. The OU Learn podcasts are divided into fourteen subject areas from Arts and Humanities to Social Sciences. Within each subject area, the podcasts are further arranged as ‘albums’ consisting of numbered tracks, containing material relevant to OU courses. The podcasts come with transcripts, related links and often feature video material too. Users can subscribe via RSS feed, iTunes, or Miro.

THE Podcast
The podcast of the Times Higher Education supplement appears as a weekly issue review, and also appears more irregularly in the form of one-off interviews with academics and authors, or discussions concerning a particular aspect of higher education. Examples include a look at higher education in Palestine, universities’ use of social media, and a discussion about university business models and the threats, or opportunities presented by massive open online courses (MOOCS), in Technology versus tradition.

True Tube
This is an educational resource for teachers of RE, PSHE and Citizenship. Featuring videos, lesson plans and ideas for assemblies, the site is aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils but material may also be suitable for more advanced levels. The site was created in 2007 by production company CTVC, with the original aim of helping young people to make films dealing with issues important to them. The all films have a strong focus on ethical issues. Whether dealing with the Body and Health, Society, Relationships, Culture or Crime, the emphasis is on encouraging young people to engage with and participate in society.
