29-3 October 2013

This two-day event designed to provoke fresh perspectives on age and ageing in relation to culture and fashion. It will comprise traditional academic papers from scholars who have examined ageing and culture as well as interactive performance events, works of art designed by LCF students working in collaboration with older people and the screening of films about later life.

It will be a cross-disciplinary, critical investigation of the multiple experiences of age and ageing through the lens of the humanities and the arts. A central aim of the event will be to investigate and interrogate cultural articulations of ageing and old age. The category ‘age’ will be re-considered, as will the categories ‘fashion’ and ‘beauty’. This conference will be linked to a special edition of the international peer-reviewed academic journal, Age Culture Humanities. Contributions will come from keynote speakers and panel members, but are also warmly invited from attendees.

The conference starts with an evening event at which Ari Seth Cohen (New York based blogger, film producer and writer) will be talking about his interest in the style of older women. The UK blogger Alyson will also be present to discuss her interest in fashion for older women.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception.

Day two of the conference will be introduced by Professor Frances Corner, Pro-Vice Chancellor University of the Arts London and will comprise academic papers from international scholars including Margaret Morganroth Gullette, who has examined the ways in which culture ages us and Professor Julia Twigg who has just published her book on Fashion and Age.

The day will also showcase ‘Laughter Lines’ which presents work made by artists and students from LCF exploring age in a variety of settings including residential care homes and there will be a performance by the company ‘Small Things‘ about age and identity.
