The Dutch Courtesan
The Department of Film,Theatre and Television at the University of York have developed this multifaceted resource to accompany the department’s production of John Marston’s play The Dutch Courtesan, which was performed on the 20, 21, and 22 June 2013. Video clips of rehearsals, production photographs, a director’s blog, rehearsal diaries, research essays and other contextual scholarly information contribute to a fascinating resource on a rarely performed play that has nonetheless generated much discussion – and disagreement – over the years. Amongst the site’s audiovisual resources is this interview with actor Oliver Ford Davies, who speaks about the challenges of performing Jacobean dramatic verse.
GoodFilms.org
Documentarian and campaigner Barbara Trent has created this resource to showcase the output of a collective of independent filmmakers, whose work confronts some of the murkier aspects of American foreign policy. From the Iran – Contra affair, through the 1989 invasion of Panama, to the Iraq War and the War on Terror, the website presents clips from the documentaries, together with links to filmmakers’ websites, where DVD copies of the films can be purchased.
Irish Writers Online
A no frills database with biographical and bibliographical information about Irish writers, past and present. Created and maintained by Philip Casey (himself a poet and novelist) this resource is particularly useful for the links on each author’s page. Many of the entries are also accompanied by video of readings and interviews, such as this clip showing Samuel Beckett talking about his final work for the stage, ‘What Where’.
National Institute of General Medical Sciences
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is an American organisation which supports research into advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The Science Education section of the website allows the user to explore by topic or media type and features a searchable collection of online scientific photos, illustrations and videos, including animations and time lapse photography.
Poetcasting
This resource aims to bring together two different kinds of poetry – ‘performance” and “literary’ – so that the practitioners of both can be heard and read via the medium of the internet. Created by Alex Pryce – a poet herself – the format is simple and unadorned. The podcasts consist of established and up and coming poets reading their work, with accompanying text providing biographical and bibliographic details. Users can search by name or keyword for 637 poems, read by 206 individual poets from Ireland and Great Britain. A links page provides details of useful and informative poetry websites.
