Becoming Human
This attractively designed website features a number of resources about the origins of humanity and human evolution. An interactive documentary Becoming Human, presented by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson, traces the human lineage over four million years, while other resources include Chromosome Connection – an interactive chromosome comparison activity – and Building Bodies, which looks at the origins of primate bipedalism. Aimed at a wide audience – from schoolchildren to academics – the site also features teachers’ guidelines, book reviews, news, bibliographies and links to other websites.

BBFC Podcasts
The British Board of Film Classification’s podcast is hosted by James Blatch, an examiner at the BBFC, who presents a regular, themed insider’s look at the board’s work. Recent examples have looked at the history of the BBFC, explaining why ‘H’ stood for horror in the 1930s and 40s, or looking back at the files of some of the James Bond films submitted to the board over the years. Other podcasts explain common issues affecting classification, such as Imitable Techniques, ie. scenes of behaviour that could be dangerous if copied. Other topics addressed by the podcast include film piracy, accessing film content online, games classification and classification of video on demand.

Dashkova Russian Centre
Named after one of the leading figures of the Russian Enlightenment and based at the University of Edinburgh, the Centre’s website has a number of media resources, including videos and podcasts, on aspects of Russian language, culture, history and politics, as well as interviews with prominent Russian academics and cultural figures. The Centre also has a YouTube channel which has an archive of the proceedings of recent seminars.

The Elstree Project
Since 2010 film and TV industry veterans have been interviewed on camera as part of a collaboration between the University of Hertfordshire and volunteer group Elstree Screen Heritage to record the experiences of those who worked at the venerable British Studio. At present the main clips relate to the filming of THE SHINING by Stanley Kubrick. An extended version of these is available from here. Dozens of interviews are due to be released throughout the year.

Phonetics – The Sound of Spoken Language
This website has Flash animations of the phonetic sounds of English, German and Spanish. The result of a project by the University of Iowa, it is aimed at students of linguistics, phonetics and languages. Each consonant and vowel has an animated articulatory digram, showing a cross-section of how the human tongue, teeth and lips move when speaking, accompanied by audio of the sound itself. Playing alongside the animations are videos showing a person speaking a selection of words, in order to put the sounds in context. There is also an explanatory diagram of the articulatory anatomy, contributing to a well-designed, useful resource.
