Media Screen Roundup – December 2012

The monthly roundup of film and television publications compiled by Simon Baker, Institute of Historical Research, & published here at the BUFVC by Linda Kaye.

Detectives loomed large in November’s Media Screen Roundup and in this Roundup we have Justice Provocateur: Jane Tennison and Policing in Prime Suspect by Cavender and Jurik. Indeed there is a definite female flavour this month. Apart from Jane Tennison,  there is Oprah Winfrey in Deborah Davis’s book subtitled, Reflections on an American legacy; an article entitled Discourse Analysis of the Representations of Women in Moroccan Broadcast News; Lakesia Johnson’s, Iconic: Decoding Images of the Revolutionary Black Woman which includes a chapter on black women in film; Nicken and Zeno’s book , Marilyn in Fashion; as well as Chinese Women’s Cinema: Transnational Contexts by Wang  and Seeing the American Woman, 1880-1920: The Social Impact of the Visual Media Explosion by Adams and Keene. Finally there is the wonderfully titled, Ban This Filth!: Letters from the Mary Whitehouse Archive.

There also a number of technological histories ranging from the 1820s to the present day, with Tom Gunning’s article on the optical toy/instrument the thaumatrope and Cianci’s High Definition Television: the Creation, Development, and Implementation of HDTV Technology. Other books of note are Heather Nicholson’s Amateur Film: Meaning and Practice, 1927-1977 and Joshua Yumibe’s Moving Color:  Early Film, Mass Culture, Modernism.
