DNA Learning Center
An educational site supported by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a major centre for molecular genetics research. The Resources Page is packed with content, ranging from videos and podcasts produced by the DNALC, highlighting key topics and recent projects, a 3-D Animation Library, a Biology Animation Library as well as other useful information such as the proceedings of a workshop on Building Modern Internet Sites for Science.

The animations – which are arranged according to subject and cover the DNA Molecule, Transcription & Translation, Experiments & Techniques and Disease & Mutation – are free to download and are accompanied by transcripts.

Engineering.com
This American website collates a wide range of audiovisual content on engineering topics, covering recent developments, careers advice, practical ‘how to’ guides as well as more theoretical and speculative material. The site’s video content is arranged across a number of shows. For example: This Week in Engineering” is a light-hearted but informative look at the latest developments in engineering; Some Assembly Required is a series giving practical guidance for specific engineering projects as well as advice on how to use 3-D instruction sets and The Product Design Show looks at the engineering behind consumer and industrial products. Other videos are arranged by Channel: Aviation and Aerospace, Automotive Engineering, Engineering Principles and Future Energy are some of the subjects covered, along with less serious categories such as Humor and Don’t Do This At Home. The site also features calculators an extensive library of journal articles, careers advice and a section devoted to articles on 3-D Printing.

The Poetry Channel
This is the online repository of the conversations, readings, workshops, Q & A sessions and interviews produced by the Poetry Trust, a Suffolk-based organisation founded in 1988 which runs the annual Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, as well as organising a year round programme of events and outreach. The podcasts, which are free to download, or subscribe to via iTunes or RSS, feature many well-known poets in conversation and performing their work, including Seamus Heaney, Fleur Adcock, Simon Armitage, Maureen Duffy and Paul Durcan. In this podcast Alice Oswald discusses her motivation and approach to writing Memorial, a moving, book-length elegy based on the dead named in Homer’s Iliad, which is followed by Oswald reading from the poem.

RedOrbit
An ambitious science and technology website that boasts over two million pages of content divided into four main areas: Science, Space, Health and Technology. Content in these categories is also searchable by Video and Images and indexed by Topics – extremely important in a website this big. The site’s scope is so wide-ranging that it is almost impossible to select a representative clip but this video showing the millipede Illacme plenipes – the leggiest animal on earth – walking on all 662 of its legs is certainly in keeping with RedOrbit’s aim to provide quantity as well as quality.

Universe Today
The clip below – an artist’s impression of recently discovered ‘rogue planet’ CFBDSIR2149-0403 – features on this excellent space-related news website which features discussions, views and up-to-the minute expert opinion on the latest stories from the world of astronomy and space exploration.

Universe Today was founded in 1999 by Fraser Cain and edited by Nancy Atkinson, whose passionate, no-nonsense approach informs the site’s journalistic style. Stories are concisely reported and illustrated with stills and video clips. In addition to the news section there is a Guide to Space, which contains facts about the solar system, the universe and other related subjects, as well as a host of useful links to other science websites.
