Recent additions to the Gateway

Coursera
This resource describes itself as a ‘social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free’. Among the institutions offering courses are Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, University of California, Berkeley and the University of Toronto. More recently the University of California, San Francisco, Edinburgh University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne have joined up to contribute to a list of 116 courses across sixteen categories including computer science, biology, education, literature, medicine, economics, mathematics and other disciplines. None of the classes counts as credit towards degrees at the participating institutions but students do receive certificates for completing their studies. The site includes a pedagogy page which explains the pedagogical foundations on which the platform is built, detailing its extensive use of interactive exercises, quizzes and ‘mastery learning’.

Discover Maths for Chemists
Beta version of website which is the result of a collaboration between The Royal Society of Chemistry and Pfizer. Discover Maths for Chemists is the first of several planned resources aimed at addressing the skills gap within the chemical industry and helping graduates master the maths skills they will need to succeed in the industry. The site features interactive quizzes, a video tutorial to get new users started, and video lectures, such as this one on the division of complex numbers. The site can be navigated via a ‘Compass’ function which is designed to guide the user through mathematical and chemical concepts and reveal how they can be linked.

Mathtutor
An online resource created and maintained by teachers, mathematicians and new media producers from the Universities of Leeds, Loughborough and Coventry and the former EBST Trust. The site is aimed at students who wish to bridge the gap between school and university, or refresh their mathematical knowledge. It is divided into seven subjects including arithmetic, algebra, geometry and vectors, differentiation and integration.

New Moon Television
Website of the production company responsible for creating and promoting the films for London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The site is divided into three main sections: ‘Corporate and Brand Films’; ‘Original Content’ and ‘Sports Bids & Campaigns’. Various films and trailers are available for viewing on the site, including Eurostar – A New Age of Travel. which reimagines the GPO Film Unit’s documentary ‘Night Mail’ as well as Definitely Not A Fairy Story, an animated warning about the dangers of climate change made for the Department of Energy & Climate Change.

RMTv
Website of the RMT transport union, showing speeches, footage of campaigns and marches, interviews and news items as well as a small selection of documentary films relevant to the trade union movement, including ‘The People’s Flag’, a 1987 documentary series on the Labour movement , part one of which can be seen here. There are also a number of campaign films made by left-wing film collective Cinema Action: The UCS Struggle is a campaign film from 1971 supporting the fight to retain their jobs by the workers at Upper Clyde Shipyards.
