‘Powers of the False’ symposium

Institut Francais, London,
18-19 May

A two-day symposium on the ethics of falsification and fiction in the documentary film is being held at the Institut Francais, London, on 18-19 May. Screenings and panels will address the complex ethics of the manipulation of real people and events in documentary, fact-fiction hybrid cinema and artists’ moving image.

Inspired by philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s term, the symposium will bring together filmmakers and academic speakers to explore filmmaking as a coercive agency. Screenings include: Two Years at Sea (Ben Rivers, 2010), Buried Land (Steven Eastwood/Alan Rhodes, 2010), Close-up (Abbas Kiarostami, 1990), Sans Soleil (Chris Marker, 1983), Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (William Greaves, 1968), plus a programme of artists’ film & video.
