Into the Light: Sir Michael Balcon and Birmingham
Birmingham City University
Saturday 12 October 2013 from 10:30 to 17:30

Join us for a free day of screenings and discussion with Lord David Puttnam, Sir Albert Bore and Tamasin Day-Lewis, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Sir Michael Balcon, the Birmingham-born film producer who led Ealing Studios during its most successful era.

This event ‘Into The Light’ is ideal for film professionals and enthusiasts, and is hosted by Birmingham City University at its new, multi-million pound Parkside Building. It will bring together contributions from family, friends and fellow film professionals to celebrate the life and legacy of Birmingham’s great ‘Film Knight’.

Michael Balcon was one of the great figures in British Film. As Head of Ealing Studios in its heyday, co-founder of BAFTA and a key figure in launching careers as diverse as those of Alfred Hitchcock, Diana Dors and David Puttnam, Balcon is acknowledged as a commanding figure in the world of film, way beyond these shores.

With contributions from Lord David Puttnam, Sir Albert Bore, the Balcon grandchildren Tamasin Day-Lewis and Deborah Richards, David Whiting, literary executor to Jill Balcon and Cecil Day-Lewis and Producer and Professor Roger Shannon, from Edge Hill University, complemented by a screening of one of Ealing’s classic films, the ‘Into The Light’ event should prove a lively, informative and thoroughly enjoyable day.

Balcon’s influence is still generously cited by contemporary film and media professionals, for example by Martin Scorsese, Sir Alan Parker and of course, by his grandchildren, Tamasin and Daniel Day-Lewis. However, he is perhaps less well known in his home city of Birmingham than he should be.

Into the Light is supported by Birmingham City Council, Birmingham City University, Marketing Birmingham, Millennium Point Trust, Swish Films, Film Birmingham and The Producers Forum.
