BBC College of Production

Screen shot 2011-02-24 at 11.08.55A listing for this new and developing resource has recently been added to the BUFVC Moving Image Gateway.

The College of Production is part of the BBC Academy, which exists in its own words to put, ‘training and development at the heart of the BBC and also works with the wider broadcast industry, equipping people with skills they need for a lifetime of employability in the ever-changing media landscape.’ It also provides courses, some in partnership with Skillset (see separate Gateway entry).

The site, currently in beta test mode, aims to provide a guide to training resources for those interested in a career in the media, specifically broadcast radio and television. This includes dozens of interviews with industry professionals discussing their areas of expertise. The site is organised as a guide to a wide variety of professional activities, from the lofty heights of director and executive producer to more artisanal jobs such as make-up designer and sound designer.

Most of the videos are about 2 to 3 minutes in length and provide succinct profiles of those working in core behind-the-scenes production jobs. The emphasis is split fairly evenly between TV and Radio though there is also a new section devoted to online production that will be expanding. See also the separate entry under BBC College of Journalism. Along with job descriptions there are also practical tips on a broad range of subjects, from how best to shoot at night or to record a ‘vox pops’ to managing the relationship between a presenter and their producer.
