Muybridgizer app

Eadweard_Muybridge_2The Muybridgizer is a free iPhone app available for download in the iTunes App Store. It allows iPhone photographers to take pictures inspired by Muybridge’s iconic motion capture experiments. The release of the app in in conjunction with the major exhibition of the British-born pioneer’s work at Tate Britain which closed this weekend after 4 months.

The Muybridgizer freeze-frames the moving world, just as Muybridge did with subjects ranging from running horses to leapfrogging boys. In homage to the analogue Victorian beauty of the originals, users can Muybridge-ize their frames with grids and sepia tones, transforming their moving images into striking vintage-style pictures. You can browse your captured sequences both as a static grid but also as frame by frame animation; speeding up, slowing down and reversing the direction of motion with swipes of your finger across the screen. Captured sequences can be shared via email or uploaded to the Flickr Muybridgizer Group. Samples of these new works are also available on the Tate Muybridizer Gallery.

The application is offered free for a limited period from iTunes.

The works of Muybridge are featured heavily in two BUFVC publications: Cinema Before Cinema by Virgilio Tosi and The Origins of Scientific Cinematography DVD both of which are being made available in exclusive UK editions.
