Friday Fun on the Gateway

Here are another 5 of our favourite BUFVC Moving Image Gateway entries that we entered or edited in the last week, with a particular focus on human rights and intellectual property rights.

BBC COLLEGE OF JOURNALISM
At the end of 2009 this brilliant site designed to teach skills to BBC journalists was opened to public access in the UK. Using hundreds of video and audio examples alongside interactive modules, the site provides masterclasses covering craft skills, law, and ethics & values. There is also an active discussion forum, glossary, and currently a section on covering the general election. It is intended to make the site available by subscription outside the UK.

This audio and video section is part of a larger, interactive website originally set up to accompany the Taking Liberties exhibition on the 900-year struggle for Britain’s freedoms and rights, held at the British Library in 2008-2009. Although the exhibition is now over, the collection of podcasts, interviews, videos and curator talks will remain available online. A virtual curator presents a series of short videos on key aspects of the Magna Carta, and there are audio recordings of talks given during the exhibition including Professor A.C Grayling on British ‘liberty; Trevor Phillips on equality and human rights in modern Britain; Ken Livingstone in a panel debate about fundamental freedoms in a world of climate change; Nigel Sadler on the Minutes of the Committee for Abolition of the Slave Trade; Polly Toynbee chairing a debate on women’s rights in the 21st century; ; Professor Nicholas Vincent on the Magna Carta; Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty on the dangers of quick-fix legislation; as well as talks on the Human Rights Act 1998, The Wolfenden Report and Paine’s Rights of Man.

JISC LEGAL
Business and Community engagement is all about further and higher education institutions making their knowledge and expertise available to the business and wider social communities. This can also be referred to as ‘Third Stream’ activity or Knowledge Transfer. Of course, Business and Community Engagement is a two way street – whilst the community benefits from the institution’s knowledge and expertise, the institution benefits from the experience of engaging with the business or social community in practice. The JISClegal website streams five short videos offering legal advice on specific aspects of such engagement – e-marketing; handling confidential information; the implications and possible limitations of using existing licensed materials as well as setting licence terms for works created; ownership of works created; legal implications of data sharing and research, application of the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information legislation.

MULTIMEDIA DEPOSITS
The purpose of this online learning object is to explore the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) that may be within multimedia items, and to highlight some of the complications and considerations that need to be taken into account before a deposit of this type can be made into a repository.
Following two short introductions to multimedia and to copyright, questions are then posed on some of the details of copyright within varying item types. Feedback on, and an explanation to, the question’s answers are given. Also included is a short exercise looking at what needs to be taken into consideration before allowing a performance video item into a repository. The learning object concludes with a look at Performers’ Rights and highlights what repository staff should be aware of in regard to this IPR within potential repository deposits.

WIPO LEX
Launched in September 2010 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO Lex is an online global intellectual property (IP) reference resource which provides up-to-date information on national IP laws and treaties. It also features related information which elaborates, analyzes and interprets these laws and treaties. The database is searchable by country and topic, including copyright and related rights, and enforcement of IP and related laws.
