St Michaels: The Devastated Village. This Network programme examines the aftermath of the Abbeystead waterworks disaster, when a water pump exploded during a visit by forty-two local residents on 23/05/84, killing sixteen and leaving twenty-eight others seriously injured. The speakers include: survivors, John Cobb; Pat Kaylor; Len Watts; John Holmes; Jim Burrow, NFU spokesman; Frank Hogarth, Wyreside filling station; Albert Clayton, local resident; the Reverend Lawrence Davies, local vicar; Diana Gardner, Women’s Institute and widow of victim. The writer and narrator is Keith Macklin. The producer is Michael Green. Originally broadcast on Red Rose Radio.
