City Week, looking back at the week’s financial news. Tom Maddocks starts with the day’s financial headlines, with the concordat between the Government and the TUC. Barclays treasurer Ron Everidge explains to financial editor Douglas Moffitt about why the bank raised its lending rate by only 1 percent. Brewers Society chairman Sir Derek Holden-Brown argues the case for not increasing excise duty on breweries. Wine and Spirit Association chairman Peter Hogarten says that increasing excise duty on wine and spirits will actually reduce the amount flowing into the Treasury. Dick Grace of Conti Commodities answers questions on commodities and price rises. David Jordan of the independently-run Low Pay Unit says that low-wage families are having a tougher time financially due to price rises than the image projected overall by the Government. The Financial Weekly, the first financial newspaper to be launched this century has gone on sale; its editor, William Davis, says his publication will help people digest financial information easily.
