Description
Prayers are being said in Armagh Cathedral and Catholic churches across Ireland today for Cardinal Thomas O Fiaich, leader of Ireland’s Catholics, who died of a heart attack. The 66-year-old Primate of all Ireland suffered a heart attack while on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. He was a controversial figure, an unrepentant nationalist whose appointment in 1977 met with Loyalist protest although he continually campaigned against sectarian violence. Catholic Bishop of Derry, Edward Daly pays tribute, as does Protestant Church of Ireland leader, Dr Robin Eames. Julian O’Neill reports from Belfast, for Downtown Radio.
