Morning Call Archive No.12: A selection of interviews from Radio Victory’s Morning Call archive reel by the station. TRACKS 1-3 DAVID SHEPHERD. TRACK 1- In - Ten sixteen on Radio Victory ... David Shepherd - wildlife and railway artist. Face not well known - earns good living from painting. Spends all his time painting. Had to learn to paint. Wanted to be game warden in Africa but failed. Went to Slade School of Fine Art, failed entrance exam. Trained by Robin Goodwin. Considers he had 1 percent talent and 99 percent training, lived 3 years with Robin Goodwin who gave him hard training. In - Elton John and ... Radio Victory jingle. Has painted picture of Christ in Army Garrison Church at Bordon, would like to be remembered by that painting. Painting was memorial to all army units who had ever been stationed at Bordon. Terrified of challenge of picture, 4 years before started, had to complete it in a month before its consecration by Chaplain General. Very large - 15 inches. Has also painted aerial view of London c1953. TRACK 2- Object of paintings is to create illusion all is there but leave some out. Art should be enjoyed and understood by everyone. Has raised much money for conservation. Man is most dangerous and destructive animal on earth. Man totally interdependent on trees, animals etc - conservation means saving the world. TRACK 3- In -You went to Africa ... Went to Africa in 1949 originally. Returns to Africa from time to time. Takes own photos from which he works. Man is only dangerous animal. Book: The Man and his Paintings, best seller, most of David Shepherd’s paintings, complete cross section of his paintings. Passion for steam engines, owns 3. Bought 2 new steam locomotives from BR in 1967 for 5 thousand two hundred pounds from proceeds of wild life art sales - Green Knight and Black Prince. Set up Somerset Railway [hairman]. Feels it was wrong to replace steam engines by diesel - much money wasted. Prefers to paint engines in engine sheds. Dvorak was steam enthusiast. TRACKS 4-9 DAVID TAYLOR - Vet. TRACK 4- Has worked with all sizes of animals all over world. Can communicate with animals through positive movements. Animals do not like unpredicatable movements, can sense unease, tone of voice. Is treating a dolphin and killer whale over the phone. Has to be ready to go anywhere in the world at a moments notice. TRACK 5- In - With me on the programme ... Sea World, Florida, has killer whales and dolphins. TRACK 6- IN - You ca not make ... Animals at Sea World are bought by reward, not cruel. Dolphins think up new tricks, would stop doing tricks if bored. Are given plenty to do between performances. Believes good marine lands give opportunities for research which would not be available on animals in the ocean. [Box 6]
