Mike Matthews in association with Vincent’s BMW this week visits the village of Kingsclere. It lies amongst the hills of North Hampshire, near Watership Down. One single track with 8 interviews: 1- Matthews visits the parish church and talks to the vicar Peter Robins. He tells the church history which is linked to the village history. 2- The home of John. He owns a wine house, off-license and has a cellar. This house is connected to the pub. He talks about the history of this house and the pub, and claims that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones played shows in the square. 3- On the outskirts of the village, we find the Sandford Farm, and Matthews talks with Ralley. He said that it was common land, that cames from the Roman times. The Romans came for the land and the spring waters, but for some reason they abandoned the area. He talks about the village history and there is a saying: Too poor to live in, and too wealthy to die. In this farm they found coins from Roman times. 4- G W Phillips, owned by Paul. He makes fire places and fire surrounds. The models are a reproduction from the Georgian period, made of carved pine wood, but a special type of pine that comes from Russia and Sweden. The marble comes from Italy. It is a very special fire place. 5- On the edge of the village, there is the home of Ian Boldings, a horse trainer for the Queen. He explains all about horse training and his establishment, which is very busy. It is a large management with lots of administration. 6- Interview at the home of Margaret Ingrams, a lady born in the village who knows a great deal about its History. She says that the settlements dates from saxon times. They found old burials from Roman times and bones from the Middle Ages. 7- In the middle of the village, is the Old Brewery, that today is a Packaging Company. The owner, Mr Nichols talks about his business and the history of the Company. They sell Italian hand-built packaging machines, which are the exclusive ones in the UK. 8- Finally, a visit to the home of Ernie, an old man born in this village in born in 1901, and he talks about his memories of childhood.
